Visit of Cameron

THE former Prime Minister of United Kingdom, David Cameron, came to Bangladesh on a short visit. He was here to deliver a keynote address in a seminar on "Global challenges in 2017".  In his address, he emphasised on importance of democracy to fight corruption and establish justice and transparency in the country. He said, development is not an enemy of democracy; it rather is an inherent power that strengthens democracy and good governance in a country. We all have to fight against terrorism and violent ideology by establishing quality democracy in the country. We cannot give up democracy, good governance and human rights to fight against some misguided terrorists.
The former British Prime Minister also said that even a small corruption should not be tolerated as it spreads like a cancer cell. If it is not eradicated, it will roar back with vengeance and aggravate the situation further. There are some people who advocate that autocracy is better for development but it is a wrong perception. Autocracy is actually a breeding ground of corruption and crime. We must exercise a healthy democracy in the society for sustained growth and development of the country.
